MADD YOUTH

MADD has a new youth focus with a series of educational and activism initiatives that directly involve young people in efforts to prevent underage drinking and impaired driving. Programs include: Youth Leadership Power Camps, Youth in Action Teams, The MADD National Youth Summit to Prevent Underage Drinking, and Protecting You / Protecting Me -an elementary school curriculum program.

Drunk driving affects everyone. We encourage people of all ages to join the fight against drunk driving and help make New Hampshire roads safer.

His Big Mistake

A poem by
Annie O'Reilly
Grade 7

There was once a boy who did what he was told,
He got good grades, many honors he would hold.
He was a senior in high school,
He was never known to be a fool.

Of course, with good things, must come a bad one,
But, what happened to him was an extremely sad one.
Though really wasn't right,
Bullies would stalk him, looking for a fight.

Then one day he had enough,
He went to a party, looking very tough.
The lady's thought he was a stud,
Then some guy offered him a bud.

He figured if he said no he'd be a jerk,
So he smiled and said, "One drink wouldn't hurt".
He gulped it down and then said briskly,
"Hey you over there, pass me that whiskey."

He didn't know how bad he looked,
And pretty soon the man was hooked.
Then it had come time to leave,
He went to his Corvette and got out the key.

He couldn't drive in a straight line,
He sped right past a stop sign.
He didn't know how fast he was going
Or that the car straight ahead was staling and slowing.

Meanwhile, the police were on their daily route,
When they saw the Corvette they said "Oh shout!"
The Corvette lying upside down in a hole,
It turns out he had hit a telephone pole!

He didn't live another day,
Neither did the man who's car staled, (sorry to say)
And because he didn't drive sober,
Both of their lives were forever over.

Alcohol is the drug most commonly used by youth in New Hampshire. Alcohol is a major factor in the three leading causes of youth death, including accidents, homicides, and suicides. Youth who drink alcohol are more likely to engage in a broad range of risky behaviors. The focus of this workshop is on local policy, regulatory, and environmental approaches to prevent youth access to alcohol. Also, participants will be introduced to media advocacy, including the creation and use of effective media bites.
